The vast majority of children under the age of six are looked after by a childminder or a nursery from Monday to Friday. It is the task of municipal authorities to provide day care facilities, and the options vary from authority to authority.

Childcare offers 0-10 years old

Daycare 0-3 years old

  • Day care (dagpleje): together with around 3-5 children the child is looked after by a childminder approved by the municipal authority. The children are cared for in private homes.
  • Day nursery (vuggestue): an institution, where your child will be around a lot of other children and cared for by nursery teachers.

Kindergarten 3-6 years old

  • Kindergarten (børnehave): an institution, where your child will be around a lot of other children and cared for by nursery teachers.
  • Outdoor kindergarten (skovbørnehave): like a normal kindergarten with a dimension of outdoor life. Your child will spend the day in the countryside or the woods among animals.

Integrated institutions 0-6 years old

  • Integrated institution (integreret institution): an institution which covers different types of childcare; for instance a nursery and a kindergarten, a kindergarten and an after-school centre or a combination of all three types of institution. This is a good solution for siblings in the age 0-6 years.

Contact your municipality to hear more about integrated institutions

After-school clubs 6-10 years old

  • After-school clubs (skolefritidsordning or SFO): an institution, where your child can be cared for after school from 1st grade till 3rd or 4th grade. Here, children can play, do their homework and participate in a number of leisure activities. SFO opening hours vary.

Childcare enrolment

It is your job to contact the municipal authorities to book a place for your child. In order to sign up for childcare you need a CPR number for your child and an address in Denmark. If there are not any places immediately available, the child's name will be placed on a waiting list. The earlier you put down the child's name, the greater the chance of finding a place when you need it.

Below is contact information for the childcare offices in the municipalities in which Aarhus University has departments or research centres.

How to put your child's name down for childcare

You can apply by downloading and completing this application form and sending it to the address shown at the form. If you do not have a CPR number yet you can e-mail the application form to:

In the form you can list your preferred childcare institutions. But you can not be guaranteed a place there, if there is none available. Therefore you can at the same time mark with a cross that you want to be guaranteed a place, which means that the municipality will offer a place in an available institution not more than half an hour of transportation-time away from your home.
