A Danish CPR number is used when dealing with public authorities, health authorities, libraries, banks, etc. By many it is called your key to living in Denmark!
After having applied for a CPR-number you will receive a yellow health insurance certificate (gule sygesikringsbevis) to document that you are entitled to health insurance services. The certificate shows your name, address and CPR number. You should always bring the certificate when you need treatment. It takes approximately one to four weeks before you receive your yellow health insurance certificate in the mail.
You will also be assigned a general practitioner (GP/doctor) when you apply for the CPR-number.
If you lose your certificate or if it is damaged, you need to pay a fee to get a new one issued.

When you move back to your home country, you must deregister from the Central Registration System (CPR) before you leave Denmark.
